Too often we are caught up in our daily routine. Sometimes it appears to be a fight against time, to make dinner, to take care of your family, to manage your deadlines: almost as if you are trying to catch up with time as it is running away from you, leaving one with a sense of fear and anxiety. And while we are doing our uttermost best to strive for perfection and manage our time in an effective and efficient manner, we somehow find ourselves between our past memories and anxiety for future events (which might never occur), causing us to sadly lose our sense of ‘living in the now’.
‘Moments are passing by without awareness, while emotions of happiness, joy, peace and serenity are squeezed in between and not completely felt. Which makes me wonder, aren’t we missing out?
‘’You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment..’’ (Henry David Thoreau), because ‘’All that is important is this one moment in movement. Make the moment important, vital and worth living. Do not let it slip away unnoticed and unused.’’ (Martha Graham). ‘’Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life’’. ~ Eckhart Tolle.
Yesterday, I went for an early morning walk and found myself standing on a beautiful bridge with an amazing peaceful view: simply breathe taking. Since I recently moved and do not feel quite familiar with my surroundings, I took a moment to stand there and embrace the view, while attempting to make every aspect of my environment my own. That is when I realized that for the past few months I have been so caught up trying to adjust and settle in, that almost every day felt like a marathon. To get used to a new environment, new individuals and to get on with life’s daily responsibilities almost became like a tornado filled with intense emotions and leaving me with a sense of restlessness, wanting to run in every possible direction, simply to catch up and make the most out of it. A feeling which sadly allowed me to forget to embrace the now: to embrace and cherish life’s every moment. In my attempt to make the most out of it, I actually managed to miss out on the true joys of life and managed to miscomprehend the simple moments of life. I failed to live each moment according to its immense value and to appreciate this new time, a new stage of life, a stage of life which might never return?
So we must ask ourselves: what is more valuable? To manage one’s time in a perfect manner, or to simply let go of the rush and embrace each moment and each step of life?
As we enter new stages in our life, our previous stages will never return, so why not make the most out of it? And live each stage, each moment and each step according to its true value? So, that tomorrow we will not regret rushing through some of the most beautiful moments of life, whether it was filled with pain, happiness, sadness or laughter. Isn’t it only fair that we give each moment the attention it deserves, rather than living our moments while dwelling on our past memories and future fears? We must never underestimate the power of living in the now and the serenity it gives to our soul. Just try it, simply let go of all the intense emotions, desires and fears. Let go and embrace the now, the stillness of the mind, tranquillity, peace and serenity – all in pursuit of observing the beautiful pearls hidden in our precious but yet often miscomprehended moments of life.

Like your other posts, this one invites returning again and again. I recently found out that the teachings of Alcoholics Anonymous and other “12-step programs” have been teaching the living of the present moment to the fullest for a long time…as have others as you point out…
So therefore this is no merely new age teaching…
Yet one for each era and situation.
Thanx for your reminder, dear Shaidi
Thank you for your kind words dear Connie!!
I wasn’t aware of the fact that this is also part of AA teachings! That’s great news. It is quite interesting to see how these awareness concepts and ‘living in the now’ approaches are used in a secular context. Many individuals perhaps have no idea that all these amazing approaches are actually part of ancient valuable wisdom. I recently read a book named, ”Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting out of the Box” (a must-read, which I would recommend to everyone!). And in this book they actually use the concept of ‘awareness and comprehending thy self’ in a leadership/corporate context, which is quite interesting, especially when you are already familiar with these various (spiritual) concepts.
I recently visited your blog btw and discovered you have other pages as well! Great work, with your permission I would like to add your blog websites to my recommended blogrolls. Btw, are you going to follow Marghdeen’s new course? starting on the 17th of January, 2012??
With my love,
Shaidi
Dear Shaidi,
Of course you and any others are welcome to add my blog websites or any one of them to your recommended blogrolls — and I would be most grateful.
So do you know about AA teachings? I just posted the FULL Serenity Prayer on my oneheartforpeace — which means more to me today than ever before in my long life.
Yes, you are so right about the fact that these principles are not a new philosophy at all yet only retellings of ancient jewel-like wisdom.
I look forward to reading the book you mentioned on Leadership and Self-Deception.
are you a leader? I’d love to know more.
Yes, I am very excited to follow Marghdeen’s new course beginiing on 17th January, 2012!
I am learning so much and the teachings are deepening my life in such a way that tears of gratitude come…
I am also supremely grateful that we are connected in such a flow and continuity — heart to heart.
Dear Connie,
I have added your blog to my blog roll! Thank you for your approval.
I would also like to thank you for sharing the serenity prayer with us, I believe I have read this before.. I am not sure if it is from Hafiz? Nevertheless, it is truly amazing and I must agree, perhaps this prayer wouldn’t touch my heart as much before as it does today. Life is really amazing, I never imagined too learn life’s most valuable gems through some of the most painful trials of my life and this is just the beginning. I pray we will all learn much more!
Please share your thoughts with me after you have read the self-deception and leadership book. I wouldn’t call myself a leader. At the moment I am fulfilling my responsibilities as a manager and pursuing additional courses.
I absolutely agree when you say “I am learning so much and the teachings are deepening my life in such a way that tears of gratitude come’’.. I feel the same! A feel instilled with immense gratitude and love, a feeling I can simply not describe. A feeling which makes me feel complete.
Hopefully I will be able to join their new course as well in January 2012 (that’s my intention). I have learned a lot from their first course and look forward to learn more. There is so much wisdom out there, sometimes I don’t know where to begin.
I look forward connecting to you in the future and to learn more about you and from you. I am also heartily grateful for our connection! Thank you
Please feel free to add us on facebook, perhaps it is much easier to communicate through facebook.
May God bless you always.
With my love,
Shaidi
